Copyright Law

A copyright protects works of authorship.

Copyright is a legal concept that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution, usually for a limited time, with the intention of permitting the creator to receive compensation for their intellectual effort. This protection applies to various forms of creative expression, including literary works, music, art, films, software, and other original intellectual and artistic creations.

Under copyright law, the creator typically has the exclusive right to reproduce the work, prepare derivative works, distribute copies, perform the work publicly, and display the work publicly with certain limitations and exceptions.

How long does it take to get a copyright?

The processing time for copyright registration applications submitted online through the U.S. Copyright Office (USCO) typically ranges from several months to a year or more, depending on the workload of the USCO.

How long does copyright protection last?

For works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection generally lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years. For works created by a corporate author, or for anonymous works or works made for hire, copyright protection lasts for 95 years from the date of publication or 120 years from the date of creation, whichever is shorter.
