The much anticipated 2014 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) promised to deliver the iPhone 6, and it did. But it also gave the gift of “one more thing” – a throwback to Steve Jobs, in case you were wondering – the exciting new “Apple Watch”. The Apple Watch will come in a variety of styles, including the “Apple Watch Sport” and “Apple Watch Edition.” But while Tim Cook was explaining the exciting new product, we were all left wondering:

“Why didn’t they call it the iWatch?”

The answer is surprisingly simple: someone beat them to it. In fact, many people beat them to it. Taking a quick look at the USPTO’s trademark database reveals that the mark iWatch has been applied for several times over for many different classes of goods and services, including watches.

Now, just because people have applied for the mark doesn’t mean Apple can’t get it at a later time. In fact, Apple even reportedly registered the iWatch trademark in several other countries, which would lead us to believe they might want to use the name. But for now, Apple hasn’t applied for any trademarks for iWatch or even Apple Watch. So we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, I’m busy pre-ordering my iPhone 6 Plus!
